If you have read the writings on Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy so far, then you will be aware of the use of direct suggestion using hypnosis to control behaviours and emotions in a therapeutic concept. As we learned, this is a format used to control the unwanted symptoms that a client is experiencing.

Often enough, this application is enough over a few sessions to achieve a satisfactory degree of success. However, sometimes it is necessary, and in fact, some therapists are in the school of thought that it is paramount, that the underlying cause of the unwanted behaviour/emotion etc is found and dealt with – in order to truly and permanently remove it from the client’s subconscious blueprint.

Therefore, in order to remove the effect, we have to explore and investigate the cause. It is a preconception in Analytical Hypno/Psychotherapy that the root causes of all problems are held within the subconscious mind. Most often these causes stem from ‘key decisions’ that were once made in response to an event or series of events, actually or perceived to be traumatic in nature, and often supressed in the subconscious.

In Psychoanalysis using hypnosis, the client is able to uncover the event and allow it to be revised using a more up to date, matured, and knowledgeable conscious mindset. Once the event has been re-examined and resolved with a different outlook, the underlying issue (cause) is thus removed and so is the corresponding symptom (effect). It is not unusual for some issues to be connected to seemingly unrelated events. Sometimes the events have long been forgotten (or supressed) by the conscious mind from conscious awareness.

My personal outlook on psychotherapy is that if there is an ‘issue’ then the underlying cause should be explored to some degree using psychoanalysis as well as other strategies, and I consider using general suggestion hypnosis in addition as an extra benefit for the client.

REGRESSION THERAPY

Regression therapy is the same concept as described above in Psychoanalysis, using hypnosis.
The word regress means to ‘go back’ and so hypnosis is used to go back into the client’s past in order to uncover previous events that are still causing pain or other behavioural issues in the present day.

It is quite remarkable to notice that we store every part of our lives so far in the subconscious mind and when explored, we can revive our experiences in quite vivid detail, recalling what we saw, heard, felt, smelt etc. We have some degree of recollection going right back to our birth, and some people can even sense memories prior to being born too!

Indeed, hypnotic regression has been used by many police forces around the world in order to aid victims and/or witnesses of crime to recall events in greater detail so that more accurate descriptions and clues can be pieced together.

There is also another sector to regression therapy and that is ‘Past-Life Regression’.

In past life regression, the client is taken back in time to a previous or past life (reincarnation). Sometimes this can go to the previous century and other times it may be hundreds of years. Clients have reencountered numerous different cultures and sometimes they even appear to have to translate from a different language. Again, the extent of the detail being recalled can be quite astonishing.

Past life regression therapy is delivered when the client is able to trace a modern day issue in their current life back to an issue or event in a previous life. Similar to standard regression therapy, if the modern day mind can understand the reason for the current issue in relation to a past life, it can usually be ‘put to bed’ and thus the issue is dissolved from manifesting within their current life.
