Everybody loves the feeling of achievement. When we achieve something we feel an element of success and our confidence gets a boost too. Some things are easier to achieve than others. The more difficult or more meaningful an achievement, the more intense the positive emotions are felt when we accomplish them, and vice versa – if we fail to achieve, the greater the feelings of disappointment etc.
How can we ensure achievement and avoid disappointment?
Nothing is guaranteed in life, but we can take positive steps to help give ourselves the best set up in achieving what we want in our lives. The best way to approach a desired achievement is to set out the outcome as a goal or a target. A goal is exactly that – a specific representation of a desired outcome.
The process of achievement is a journey from where you are now to successfully accomplishing that goal. Now consider the fact that to arrive at a destination in the most efficient way, it is always best to follow a map. Achieving a goal is no different; we have far better chance of success if we map out the journey to reaching that goal. Furthermore, if the same achievement has been accomplished by others in the past and we seek the same level of success, then it also makes sense to consider taking the same route.
Big goals are just dreams
Very often we dream big things but then beat ourselves down from even starting to achieve them as they feel too ambitious or just too overwhelming. I believe that every year there are hundreds of dreams that are binned in the trash due to overwhelm and a drop in belief.
However, if these dreams were initially tackled with a more structured approach, then I believe that many of them would in fact succeed. Certainly, sometimes the bigger projects do take a twist and a turn here and there along the way – but first you must start. In fact, it has been stated that ‘goals are simply dreams with a plan’. The problem with big dreams is that they flood the owner with feelings of overwhelm. The problem is not that the dreams are too big, but that they are not broken down enough into smaller goals.
Why do people give up on their goals?
Another part to the puzzle of achievement is that too many people do start, only to give up half way in. There are many reasons for this but generally they are:
- Lack of motivation – the desire to achieve has waned.
- Lack of support – support network is weak or even negative.
- Lack of resources – cannot succeed without the required resources.
- Lack of confidence – all of the above will result in confidence reduction.
Believe it or not, we are not the best self-motivators, as fundamentally we do not like change. We are not wired to take risks; our brains are designed to keep us operating at the status-quo. Likewise, our parents and others closest to us are wired the same, and most often these people will talk you out of achieving a dream. It is not that they don’t want you to be a roaring success, they just want you to avoid the pain of struggle and possible disappointment. If you just stay where you are then you will not be hurt. Then there are friends that will talk you out of achieving simply as a means to keep themselves feeling ‘safe’ because they don’t want to feel inferior to you if you go on to achieve greater things.
Ultimately we need good support and motivation. We also need resources, and if we start to feel that we don’t have or are running out of the required resources, we can easily jump on the bandwagon of negativity and provide ourselves with the excuse as to why we can not achieve this goal and so head towards the exit. All of the above will of course affect our confidence in a negative way and this in itself is a vicious circle.
Help is Here
Coaching is the key to fighting back against all these negativities. Think of the image of a coach in sports, how he motivates his team and keeps them on track. Results coaching is no different. Success is not solely based upon luck, genetic make-up or background, but is in fact a science. There are certain factors and laws that point towards achievement. Therefore, success is a result of the science of achievement.
To achieve success in anything serious these days, you must possess 3 things:
1: An abundance of confidence (Mind-set) – but most people carry an abundance of doubt, both from themselves and delivered from others. A coach helps to explore and repair negative and limiting beliefs, then install and feed confidence which breeds belief and certainty.
2: The right insights, ideas, and instruction (Planning & Feedback) – but most people are blinded by their own narrow vision and fail to have a road-map to follow. A coach helps you to see alternative angles, brainstorm ideas, and produce a clear and concise map of how to get from where you are to where you want to be.
3: Constant inspiration and motivation (Action) – but most people cut themselves short with procrastination and complacency. A coach helps push you to deliver, holds you accountable, and keeps you on track to achieve – again and again.
By hiring a professional coach you will benefit from:
- Optimising motivation
- Repairing limiting beliefs
- Confidence boosting
- Alternative perspectives & insights
- Professional goal-setting techniques
- Receiving constant positive support
- Increased resourcefulness
- Accountability to stay on track
I strongly feel that we are all capable of so much more than we ever give ourselves credit for. Just think how many goals and dreams have been left unmade because we didn’t believe that we could do it.
Every one of us holds a special spark to achieve something more than we already have. A coach helps to ignite that spark in you and ensure that you achieve what you are truly capable of and deserve. When you hire the assistance of a professional coach, you can achieve more than you ever dreamed of and in a speed that you thought was impossible.
