Cancer is a terrible disease that affects around 18 million people a year, with over 10 million ending in death (2018). It affects every age group in every country and the effects of the disease also ripple through the family attached to the sufferer. I lost my own mother to cancer when I was 15 years old. I was told at the age of 12 that my mother would be dead within 3 months – she died 3 years later.

I admire that her strength and determination to see me mature kept her going until she finally had to let go. I am unsure of exactly which treatment she received. I do know that she was on increasing doses of morphine and suspect that this is what finally killed her if the truth be told.

Cancer comes in many forms, listed below in order of commonality:

  • Lung
  • Breast
  • Colorectum
  • Prostate
  • Stomach
  • Liver
  • Oesophagus
  • Cervix Uteri
  • Thyroid
  • Bladder

The main types of mainstream conventional treatment administered to cancer patients are:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy and/or Radiotherapy
  • Immunotherapy
  • Pain & Sleeping Medication

Often the patient will receive a mixture of different applications as seen fit by their doctor. In some countries where the facilities are available and the budget allows, there may be opportunity to provide psychological counselling to the patient and their family. It is very common for cancer patients to suffer from anxiety and depression when they are diagnosed and faced with the possible fatality of cancer.

Whereas I am available to provide similar help through coaching to anybody that requires psychological help in dealing with their situation, the scope of this article is actually to introduce a further form of help.

We cannot dismiss the power of the mind and we cannot dismiss the connection that the mind has with the body. Therefore, I would like to invite you to consider what may be possible if we truly engaged the full power of our subconscious mind with the remarkability of our body. The aforementioned therapies and medications are well established in treating cancer, but why is the full power of the mind – body connection not added to this basket of applications?

There is no guarantee that this added approach will cure the cancer, likewise there is no guarantee that any of the other treatments will either. What we do know however, is that if something is available to offer help and it is not applied then the chances of improvement or cure are lessened.

In my studies of various therapies and coaching I have read about some astonishing achievements in the medical world as a result of using alternative approaches to therapy. Many cases document remarkable improvement and others report something more akin to a miracle. Therefore, surely this option of an additional or alternative application of treatment should not be overlooked.

Cancer is one particular disease that usually develops over time and is often a result of the manifestation of one or more underlying emotional stressors. Sometimes, just being able to finally uncover the deep rooted induction of that process and dealing with it accordingly can help turn a disease around.

Sometimes it is more of a direct approach to connect with the natural healing powers of the body and helping to induce optimum alignment, focus and attention on the healing process itself. This therefore should be labelled as complimentary therapy as opposed to alternative.

There are other alternative therapies used towards cancer treatment like herbal and vitamin medicines as well as some other extreme speciality substances.

It has been stated that some of these may interfere with the mainstream forms of therapy and so should be discussed thoroughly with a doctor. Let me be clear that my view of treatment that I am presenting is not specifically against mainstream treatment, but is in fact offered more as a compliment to it.

I think cancer treatment should entail an integrative approach of any and all applications that may offer an improvement in the ability of the sufferer to cope with the disease as well as an endeavour to reverse and cure it.
